“Matter” was inspired by the idea of a human completely open to the influences of the world; similar to an antenna which is designed to be ideally receptive to the electromagnetic field it is immersed in. The man’s outstretched arms evoke the image of Jesus on the cross; he stands on his toes as if he is about to lift up. The man is of African descent, the place of human origin. Waves propagate over his body, seemingly emanating from the top of his forehead, from a square area evoking the Tefillin, a small black cube worn by some Jewish communities during prayer.
